We were honoured to welcome Invictus Games athlete, Jaco VanBiljon to Active Clinics to try out our cryotherapy chambers this month. We were even more pleased to hear that after his sessions with using our cryo-chambers, he had no need to reach for his pain medication!
For those who don’t know him already, you’d better watch this space – Jaco van Biljon is a South African former army Corporal, who has been selected for the UK team taking part in the Invictus Games, Sydney 2018. He will be compete in the Power lifting, Indoor Rowing, and Swimming events at the prestigious games this month.
A degenerative disc disorder had left Jaco van Biljon in a very dark place at the beginning of 2017, and his army career was sadly cut short. Like many ex-forces personnel, having to endure such a huge life style change can come as a shock to the system, and the transformation into a new life was difficult for Jaco van Biljon.
Biljon said, “I was unable to play with my son, which hit me the hardest. Previously, I was able to play with his elder sister all of the time, but when my son was old enough to join in, my injury stopped me doing even the simplest of things with him. The physical pain was bad enough, but far worse was that my son was missing out. In that respect, I felt I was letting him down, and that hurt the most”.
Luckily for Biljon, Help for Heroes helped to secure a place at the 2017 Warrior Games in Chicago for him, and introduced him to fellow armed forces charity, Mission Motorsport, who help wounded, injured and sic personnel recover through motor sport activities. The South African former army Corporal sees the Invictus Games place as the icing on the cake for what has been a tough trans-formative year.
Speaking about his experience with Active Clinics, and his cryotherapy chamber treatments, Biljon said, “[Cryotherapy] has been amazing. I walked into Active Clinics with the notorious pain in my back. After my first cryotherapy chamber treatment, my back felt so much better. Now, a few sessions later as we get ready to fly out for the Invictus Games, I’m walking out with no sore muscles at all. My back has been a real struggle for me, so to see an improvement there, so much so that I haven’t had to take a single painkiller, it has improved my quality of life”.
We wish Jaco van Biljon all the best at the Invictus Games this month, and hope that he continues to reap the rewards of good cryotherapy treatments for pain relief!
